GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories — Several Gaza websites on Thursday published lists of Palestinians expected to be freed from Israeli jails in exchange for the release of a captured Israeli soldier.
The lists were unofficial as neither Israel nor Hamas has formally announced the names of the 1,027 Palestinians set to be released in exchange for Gilad Shalit under a deal announced Tuesday night.
But on Thursday, several websites affiliated with the Hamas movement as well as the official website of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) militant group published lists purportedly naming Palestinians to be freed.
The website of the Hamas-run Al-Aqsa television published a list of 315 names, while the website of the PRC, which was one of the groups involved in Shalit’s capture, posted a list of 450 prisoners.
Under the Egypt-mediated deal between Israel and Hamas, a first group of some 450 Palestinian prisoners will be released next week as Shalit is freed from captivity in Gaza, where he has been held since his June 25, 2006 capture.
A second group of 550 Palestinian prisoners will be freed within two months.
PRC spokesman Abu Mujahed told AFP that the list of 450 names on the group’s website was an official list, but Hamas declined to confirm whether the document was final or not.
The PRC list includes senior Hamas leaders Rawhi Mushtaha and Jihad Yaghmur, who was convicted in connection with the capture of an Israeli soldier.
