LAHORE – Giving breathing space to the PPP-led Federal government, PML-N President Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has offered that his party is ready to work with the government for the sake of national interests provided the Centre came up with viable solution to the problems faced by the masses.
To him, since the PML-N did not have the requisite number of Parliamentarians to bring an in-house change, and the only plausible option left with the party is the joining hands of the PML-Q if the latter shun supporting the government.
‘In case of successful no confidence against the Gilani government, for the remaining term of the present Assemblies the Prime Ministerial candidate can be of any other party instead of the PML-N’, he offered conditional-cum-couched reconciliation to estranged parties, especially former friends-turned-foes Chaudharys of Gujrat.
‘If the PML-Q quits the government, talks could be held with the ‘Q’ faction’, he made yet another offer.
He was talking to a delegate of Council of National Affairs on Wednesday at his Raiwind residence. PML-N Deputy Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal, Senator Pervaiz Rasheed and Dr Asif Kirmani were also present on the occasion.
He revealed that his party was in contact with PML-Q. However, he negated reports of his meeting with his Q-League’s counterpart Ch Shujaat Hussain.
‘I have met him during the All Parties’ Conference’, he was quick to add.
Nawaz Sharif was of the considered opinion that seeing the track-record, we had reached the conclusion that the PPP government had become incorrigible and its further stay in power would bring more disaster to the country.
About the war on terror, he said the blunder was started by Musharraf, and the present rulers were continuing with it.
‘To take Pakistan out of the current quagmire, we are ready to support the government and the security forces’, he said, while reiterating his previous stance that had the Federal dispensation would have executed Parliamentary resolutions of October 2008 and May 2011 and adopted stern stance over the Raymond Davis issue, Pakistan would not have faced the present situation.
‘The government must bring the APC resolution to the Parliament, and come up with effective mechanism, otherwise, the declaration will be a deception to the nation’, he observed.
In an attempt to shed light on the wide gap between the PPP and his party, Nawaz Sharif retraced history by mentioning that when Asif Ali Zardari violated the Bhurban and Islamabad declarations, which led to extending of the distance.
‘Zardari entertained intentions of continuing with the PCO judges, but was made to restore pre-November 3 judiciary as result of ever-mounting pressure of the lawyers, civil society and other sections of the society, and long march. But he has not accepted this judiciary in the true sense, and is on the collision course by rejecting its verdicts’, he opined.
He further observed that beside the independent judiciary, the Parliament was not taken seriously.
Nawaz made it clear that he had no regrets about the PML-N policy spanning over three years, since democracy demanded that the government came into power after February 2008 polls, should have been given due time.
‘But during this period, the PML-N was involved in constructive Opposition, not a friendly one. However, imposition of the Governor’s Rule in Punjab and dismissal of Shahbaz Sharif govt were its penalties’, he added.
To him, the accountability law was effective, and his party wanted such a transparent system, to be applied across the board.
He made it clear that his ideas regarding friendship with India, were not an outcome of any specific group or organisation, and he had his own views. To him, all the outstanding issues could be resolved through dialogue.
About violence in Karachi, Nawaz Sharif hinted at the possibility that India could have been involved in the unrest.
He rejected US accusations that Pakistan was involved in the Kabul attack.
Agencies add: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has announced to carry out a protest rally and stage a sit-in at the President’s House today against the worsening security situation in Balochistan, the unending loadshedding and US threats of attack.
Talking to media persons outside the Parliament House, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Wednesday termed ‘President Zardari’s rule’ as a calamity for Pakistan, saying that his party would hold a protest rally and dharna outside the Aiwan-e-Sadr today (Thursday) to convey its serious concerns over Balochistan situation, loadshedding and silence of the government over American threats. Ch Nisar said the government claims to be a democratic one but neither it understands democratic language nor follows democratic principles. He said it has become a national manifesto either to awake it from slumber or remove it. Nisar said People’s Party has become Zardari League and made the life of the people miserable. He said the situation has reached to such a point that it has become a sin to sit idle.
The leader of the opposition said out of the 50 parties that attended the APC, all except one rejected the government’s view point and for the first time a draft resolution prepared by the opposition was adopted. He regretted that despite passage of several days the government has not moved to implement the APC resolution. He said the PML-N would not sit idle ad join the people on roads and streets in protest against load shedding, law and order and other issues.
