The recent increase in power tariff has been challenged in Lahore High Court (LHC).
The petitioner's lawyer Mateen-ul-Haq Chaudhry on Saturday took the stance before the Lahore High Court that the government has put undue burden over the masses by increasing power tariff by Rs 3.04 per unit due to which price hike will further increase in the country.
He prayed to the court to issue stay order against power tariff hike as loadshedding continues across the country despite already higher electricity rates.
The electricity tariff for distribution companies of Wapda was raised on Friday by an average 30 per cent - the highest increase in the country's history - after the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) passed on to consumers the impact of imbalance in generation mix in August this year.
Nepra spokesman Syed Safir Hussain Shah said that an increase of Rs3.04 per unit in the tariff for all consumers had been allowed for the month of August 2011 after a public hearing under the monthly fuel adjustment formula.
While power rates have been increased and the government is claiming to have minimized the load shedding, Lahore suffered the most on Friday night as there were frequent disruptions in supply of electricity.
